Orchards were a common site on every farm. Peaches, apple and pear trees grow especially well in North Texas. Peaches are a fresh indication of summer. Pears depend on bees for pollination and ripen best off the trees. Apples could be dried for future use; crushed for juice, cider, or vinegar; or canned as apple butter for serving through the months after harvest. Apples and pears could also be kept fresh through the winter if stored in a cool dark place such as a root cellar or under a porch.
