Grapevine's 28th Annual Main Street Days Welcomed Crowds, Would-Be Train Robbers and Pizza During Three-Day Festival

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS (May 20, 2012) - Visitors to Grapevine's 28th Annual Main Street Days enjoyed delicious pizza at the Pizza Piazza, premium craft beers at the Pizza Piazza Pub, wines from Italy and Texas throughout the festival, live music, the Grillin' Competition, Roma's Pizza Toss Academy, entertainment for children and more. In addition, visitors also got the first look at Grapevine's Glockenspiel with the Would-Be Train Robbers, Nat Barrett and Willy Majors.

"Main Street Days was fun, filled with folks and pizza everywhere," said festival chairs Mike and Carolyn Lease. "We were thrilled to see so many people enjoying Historic Downtown Grapevine. It's the volunteers, civic clubs and service organizations and sponsors who worked so hard to make Main Street Days such a success."

Patrons at the festival sampled pizzas from nine Grapevine restaurants and voted for their favorite. Festival officials awarded the following categories:

People's Pizza Pick:
? Gold - Farina's Winery & Café
? Silver - Palio's Pizza Café
? Bronze - Napoli's Italian Café

Best Hand-Tossed Pizza - Amore's Pasta & Pizza
Best Dressed Booth - Palio's Pizza Café
Best Rookie Participant - Boston's the Gourmet Pizza of Grapevine
Best Showmanship - Papa Murphy's
Most Unique - i Fratelli Pizza
Best Thin Crust - California Pizza Kitchen
Best Thick Crust - Napoli's Italian Café
Mr. Main Street Day's Chairman's Choice - Farina's Winery & Café
Mrs. Main Street Day's Chairman's Choice - Cliff's Star Grill

Twice each day, crowds of festival-goers were seen gazing 75-feet upward to the Grapevine Glockenspiel Clock Tower to see the brand new two larger-than-life, 9-foot tall Glockenspiel characters, known as the Would-Be Train Robbers, Nat Barrett and Willy Majors. Located in the 127-foot high Clock Tower in the new Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau's Headquarters and Museum Complex, these two figures emerge shortly before the stroke of noon and 6 p.m. each day to attempt a lucrative train heist, yet the pair ultimately learn that crime doesn't pay. Applause could be heard after each viewing throughout the weekend as festival-goers became the first guests to experience this new Grapevine landmark.

Also throughout the weekend, teams competed in the Grillin' Competition presented by BBQ Outfitters Southlake. On Sunday, the winners of the qualifying rounds, which were held on Friday and Saturday, competed by grilling pizzas on a Big Green Egg. The winner of the championship session on Sunday, Neil Dwayne Neal of Grapevine, TX, in addition to winning a Big Green Egg during the qualifying round, won a $1,000 package from BBQ Outfitters Southlake. Mr. Neal won the first round by grilling Honey Sesame Chicken. His pizza for the Championship Round was the Applewood Smoked Hawaiian Pulled Pork Pizza. The winning recipes will be available www.GrapevineTexasUSA.com in the next few days.

Children at the festival enjoyed the brand new Roma's Pizza Toss Academy, where they could learn how to toss pizza like their favorite pizza pro! Ten sessions were held throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival, children in two ages brackets, ages 5 - 9 and ages 10 -14, competed in the LEGOLAND® Discovery Center's Junior Builder Competition held at the KidZone presented by Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine.

The 29th Annual Main Street Days will be held May 17, 18 and 19, 2013. The 28th Annual Main Street Days benefits historic preservation and restoration projects in Grapevine.
